SOMERVILLE's THREE SERVICE CLUBS GIVE THANKS
On November 23, 2010, Somerville News

Message from President Jeannie P. Scarpa

The Somerville Rotary Club is an active organization of local business and professional men and women united together with a focus on serving the needs of the Somerville community. Our mission local and worldwide is to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world. We are one of over 30,000 Rotary Clubs located in more than 160 countries worldwide.

The main objective of Rotary is service, and our Somerville Rotary Club has a long tradition of supporting community organizations and initiatives. Recent service projects helped supply local food pantries with needed inventory in difficult economic times. With reading programs and school library donations we have supported literacy in the local schools. In addition, we continue our tradition of providing scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are Somerville residents, and funding for the Regional Science Fair at Somerville High School.

We also join forces with several not-for-profit organizations that deliver services to individuals and families in the community. These organizations include the Somerville Homeless Coalition, Walnut Street Center, The Giving Camp, St. Patrick’s Shelter for Women and the Salvation Army.

The Somerville Rotary Club also supports regional and international initiatives through Rotary International. Following in the Rotary motto, Service Above Self, Rotary International funds projects that aim to eradicate polio, combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education and job training, and promote peace. Each member of the Somerville Rotary Club puts Service Above Self into action by giving a little of ourselves, one project at a time. Our accomplishments are noteworthy, but there is still so much to be done.

Why Join the Somerville Rotary Club? First of all, you will have the opportunity to build personal and professional friendships. You would be a member of a world renowned humanitarian service organization united by a common mission. You will make a difference in the ability of the Somerville Rotary to meet the many service needs of our community. And you will have fun doing it!

On Tuesdays, the Rotary Club of Somerville meets at the Mount Vernon Restaurant, 14 Broadway, Somerville at 12:15 p.m. Join us for traditional Rotary fellowship, good food and lively discussion. You will find that you will have a good time, and you will also be doing good for the Somerville community and the world.

Please check the Calendar on this website and come join us!

"Reach Within to Embrace Humanity" is the Rotary Theme for 2011-2012

I am humbled and honored to serve as President of the Somerville Club in implementing this theme locally in our Community and with Rotary International, the worldwide Rotary organization.

Yours in Rotary, Jeannie Scarpa
